The recently popularized and beloved real-time strategy mobile game, “Clash Royale”, has become a hot topic online with its surge in new players coming from streamer promotion, exciting card evolutions and all of its new updates.
“Clash Royale” consists of a multiplayer battle game where player-based cards are used to go up against opponents and destroy their towers before they destroy yours. A new update that was introduced to the game is Heroes, which are special cards that, alongside Champions, have specific abilities that are special to that card. Players can put cards in a specific spot to give them the powers of a hero, but only six cards can gain the powers of a hero so far: the Wizard, Ice Golem, Mini P.E.K.K.A, Musketeer, Knight and Giant.
These special abilities make a huge difference in the strategy of the game. There’s no need for charges like the Evolutions, as you go into the game with them instantly unlocked and ready to place down. Whether it’s flying, freezing enemies or making everyone attack you, the Heroes have many unique abilities.
Starting with the Hero Knight, which was the first Hero added to the game, he allows a player to get a shield and have all of the cards around him (in a specific area) attack him.
“[I’d consider him to be] probably the best Hero, but you just have to use it in the right deck, such as a deck that uses cards that absorb or ‘tank’ damage,” Josiah Hall (8) said.
The Hero Musketeer has a very fun ability that players can use in many diverse ways. You can spawn a turret for more damage towards towers, troops, or buildings. Players can ultimately use it to develop a whole different strategy to win the game.
The Hero Mini P.E.K.K.A needs time to build up, but can be really strong if used right, as whenever it hits a troop or tower or literally anything, it gains a charge. And when the circle around the ability button fills up, you can use the ability, gaining levels depending on how full it is, with a total of three full bars and six levels. It takes three hits to fill up one bar, and one full bar to earn two levels. Whenever a player uses the ability, it heals the card for 33% of its total health.
The Hero Wizard has a very different ability compared to everyone else. When a player uses it, the Wizard takes flight and cannot be hit by regular ground troops if they can’t defend air cards. In the five seconds that the Hero Wizard is in the air, it gains a 50% speed boost, so it can move faster towards the towers, is immune to melee attacks and its fireballs gain a tornado effect that pulls enemies in and deals damage over time.
The Hero Goblins are the newest hero to “Clash Royale” and, honestly, have stolen the show. Their ability can be both really annoying and can be used very strategically if played right. Their ability is that when the last Goblin that dies also puts a flag down, and a timer starts. Once that timer is up, or you press the ability button on your screen, four more Goblins spawn with max health wherever the flag was placed. This ability can be really well used in a certain deck that players call “Log Bait,” and in that kind of deck, you try to make your opponent use the card called “The Log”, and if you do make them use it, you can place down cards like Skeletons or Goblins to punish them for using an Area of Effect (AoE) type card. With this ability, they either have to take the damage to their tower or use their log and take the damage anyway. In a Log Bait deck, people usually use many cards like skeletons and goblins or cards that cast low elixir, Elixir being the ‘money’ you use to buy cards in your hand, pretty much saying it has a low cost and is easy to deploy or ‘put out’ to prompt the opponent to use the Log card.
“Heroes are regular units, but they have a different look and have abilities that cost a certain elixir,” Noble Anawi (9) said. “They really make an impact on the game because of the abilities, whether it be dodging attacks or growing wings, there’s a ton of strategy behind them.”
With these kinds of new and interesting updates, the “Clash Royale” community has somewhat grown, and there has been more strategy added to the game. With so many new versions of cards, bringing new ways to play the game, and new strategies to use, these additions have brought in so many new players — and you could be one of them too, but be warned, there are people in the game that spend money to get very good cards, and it makes the game not very fun for people that don’t pay to win. Even though some people pay to win, the game is still very fun and definitely worth a download.
