Have you ever wanted to try an incredibly niche Somali recipe that tasted beyond amazing? Well, if you have, let me tell you about the delectable food known as Bur Shubaal, also known as Somali pancakes.
Bur shubaal is very soft and pretty sweet, often being described as cake-like. It is often equated to many pancake-adjacent favorites such as mashmash, crepes and malawah. Bur shubaal, however, stands above all of these other foods with its unique texture and sweet taste. With that, I will now teach you how to make my absolute favorite meal: bur shubaal!
“I ate bur shubaal for the first time recently, and it was one of the best foods I’ve ever tasted,” Holly Hermal said. “I’d love to learn how to make them for myself one day. It was perfectly sweet but not too sweet, [and] soft but not at all sloppy.”
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 1 medium egg
- ⅓ cup white sugar
- 1 cup of white flour
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Instructions:
- In a blender, add 1 or 1 ½ cups of milk (the more milk, the softer the pancakes will be), crack 1 egg, ⅓ cup of white sugar, and one cup of white flour.
- Blend, then heat one tablespoon of vegetable oil in a frying pan with your stove on medium heat.
- Pour some of the mix onto the frying pan and flip till each side is decently brown. On average, the flipping process takes around 1-2 minutes for each pancake.
Pro-tip: If you’re making for a large group (or are just extra hungry), double the recipe’s ingredients for double the deliciousness. Once you are done cooking the bur shubaal, enjoy it! Many people think bur shubaal goes well with savory foods such as a sambusa or pasta, but that’s up for you to decide, of course. It also works well on its own, and while toppings aren’t typically served like American pancakes, hot tea is recommended to enjoy on the side.
