This year, the Emmys held their 77th annual ceremony, highlighting the best in television from June 2024 to May 2025. From acting honors to recognition for writers and directors, the Emmys awarded high-profile stars such as Seth Rogen for the AppleTV+ comedy “The Studio”, Cristin Milioti for the HBO Max comic book series “The Penguin”, and many more.. However, before anyone came to the stage to deliver a speech, there was the red carpet, where everyone got their time to shine. Glamorous Hollywood figures stunned with their amazing clothing and accessories, and even one outfit featured a popular overpriced little figure.
“Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega was one of the biggest names to make heads turn with her beautiful but revealing shiny top. She went for the semi-nude look adorned in gemstones that barely covered up her chest. Accompanying this, Ortega sported a simple black piece of fabric covering her lower body featuring a slit that revealed one of her legs. Some stated that her outfit was inspired by Lisie Von Rhuman’s character from the campy 90s comedy “Death Becomes Her”. Unfortunately, she was not nominated for any of the awards that night. However, if she were, I doubt she would have lost.
“Ortega’s [controversial] diamond look was very refreshing because I think that the Emmys outfits can be boring compared to other red carpets, like the Grammys,” Hayden Shackle (12) said.
Arresting looks weren’t reserved for the young, though. The graceful Parker Posey, who was nominated for HBO’s satirical anthology series “The White Lotus”. Posey’s outfit featured striking shades of pink and purple blended together. Depending on the lighting and angle from which you view the outfit, these colors shone through in different ways, creating an awe-inspiring color scheme. Her outfit’s silhouette was very flowy and layered, as if she took inspiration from an elegant night gown. At her shoulders were see-through sleeves with fur at the ends. The bottom of each layer featured vintage-style white sewn-in designs that followed a pattern to make the dress stick out. Posey’s rhinestone-adorned flats ensured she would be able to walk comfortably down the red carpet but still retain her fashionable status.
K-pop idol Lisa from BLACKPINK was also present at the red carpet. Her beautiful outfit complemented Posey’s with a similar pink and flowy dress, but it also elegantly features a slit at her waist that reveals one of her legs. Resembling a texture somewhere between water and cotton candy, Lisa’s look is completed by opaque pink pointed heels and an oversized choker necklace filling the space around her bare collarbone.
This year at the Emmys, viewers also got a returning taste of bold creativity with the drag queens of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season 17, who always stand out at the ceremony. The reality TV show was nominated for Reality Competition Program, but while they didn’t take this one home like they did in 2023, they did take home a bunch of eyes. Joella, also known as the “slaysian diva of Los Angeles,” was the queen everyone was talking about online, and the next day, as she dressed as a Labubu during the Emmy’s red carpet pre-show event. Tan fur, bamboo hat, face and ears, plus an apron with red and gold brocade, her Asian take-out-styled purse pulled it all together, according to her nickname. Her outfit combines traditional Chinese couture with a modern trend, cleverly tying together her heritage as a Chinese-American.
“The Labubu at the Emmys was crazy,” Iris Bergan (12) said. “When I saw it walk down the red carpet, I thought it was fake at first since no one has ever done something that [strange]!”
While the winning outfit overall, if I were judging like an episode of “Drag Race”, would have to go to the Labubu aka Joella, the others mentioned here and many more also made quite the impression in their own ways. The Labubu simply was the most eye-catching, unique and—perhaps ironically—smartest thing to do if you wanted the attention. And certainly, Joella got exactly what she wanted, even if it wasn’t a statuette.
