Alex Consani is an American model whose fame rose in recent years due to her social media presence. You might know her on TikTok by her handle @captincroook. Hovering around 4.3 million followers and featuring videos averaging around five to ten million views each, many people have fallen in love with her authentic and campy videos, but Alex Consani isn’t just an internet persona—she’s also an incredibly talented model. In an interview with Ana Escalante of WhoWhatWear, Consani reveals her upbringing and journey as a young model. Originally from Pentaluma, California, a small town where she ended up figuring out in her pre-teen years just who she was, Consani transitioned to female at the age of eight with the immense support of her mother. At around the same age, Consani had taken a huge interest in modeling, wanting to really get out there. She started out her modeling career in 2015 at the age of 12––being named the youngest transgender model in the world at the time. This small bump pushed her further into the world along with signing to prestigious modeling agency IMG in 2019, though it arguably wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020 that Consani really became a widely known internet presence. She popped off with her Gen Z comedic style videos, gaining massive amounts of engagement and accumulating 700,000 followers on TikTok at the time. However, this was just the start of Consani’s rise to fame.
“I think [she‘s] very funny and I like how she shows her true self.” said Corriah Twitty (11), “A lot of models don’t really show their personalities that much, so it’s a refreshing thing to see.”
At the start of her career, Consani made her runway debut in New York City with Tom Ford in 2021. She has made multiple appearances in ad campaigns and photo shoots since this breakthrough moment, gaining a million followers on TikTok by the end of 2022. Though the hardships of being in the Bay Area while searching for model gigs, which has never been a particular hotspot for the industry, had caught up to Consani, her recent choice to move out to New York really solidified her career. She’s mentioned her love for the city’s diversity and inclusivity to many different groups of people on social media, making New York perfect for a city girl like her.
“Despite numerous controversies, I have a great amount of respect for Consani. I like that she uses her platform to discuss her experiences as a trans woman in her field,” Graydon Evans (11) said. “I think that it sends an important message to younger generations of what they can accomplish regardless of their [gender identity or] sexual orientation.”
Consani has grown incredibly as a model and a person of influence in her career. In recent years, she has been spotted modeling for multiple high-end brands like Alexander Mcqueen and Versace. She’s found her way to be on the cover of multiple magazines too, such as Vogue, The Face and Pop.
By the end of 2024, Consani was nominated for Model of the Year at the London Fashion Awards and ended up with a stunning win, becoming the first trans model to win the honor. With this came lots of overwhelming support for her career, and trans models in general, on a global scale. She’s announced via social media a hope to have people find her as an inspiration for young models, especially for the trans community, knowing they can achieve anything.
