Refreshing watermelon agua fresca with some fresh watermelon on the side makes for a tasty sweet treat, even in winter!

New recipes are trending daily on TikTok and other social media apps. People love these supposed “new and original” takes on classic dishes, snacks, and treats, especially when they don’t take a lot of culinary expertise to execute. The thing about some of these recipes is that they aren’t actually that original. Some of these recipes add extra ingredients, change how it’s prepared, and attempt to pass it off as something fresh when, in fact, the only thing that’s fresh about it is the produce in the ingredients list.

A drink that had not only the recipe changed but also had its name completely changed when it went viral was agua fresca. Agua fresca is a traditional and widely known Mexican drink that is suddenly being discovered and known as “spa water,” trending all over the internet. Worldly agua fresca enjoyers from Mexico and beyond have justifiably been calling out the ignorant fad for using most of the same ingredients and preparations as agua fresca.

If you have ever considered joining the naive bandwagon and making “spa water,” how about making some old-fashioned agua fresca instead?

Ingredients:

  • 20 oz (about 4 cups) chopped small fruit (popular flavors include but are not limited to watermelon, mango and cucumber)
  • 1 ½ cups cold water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (or honey)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 2 cups ice

Instructions:

  1. Add cubed fruit, water, sugar, and lime juice to a blender or food processor.
  2. Cover with lid and blend until well pureed.
  3. Pour mixture through a sieve (or sifter or mesh strainer) into a pitcher or bowl with a spout.
  4. Add ice to individual glasses. Pour strained mixture over ice and serve cold.

While trendy recipes may come and go, there’s something special about sticking to the classics. Agua fresca is a timeless drink that has been loved for generations, and sometimes it’s better to enjoy the tried and true. So, next time you’re craving a refreshing drink, why not go for the old-fashioned agua fresca? Cheers to keeping it classic!
