¨I’ve worked at Columbia Heights High School for 18 years. The most challenging thing has been to find ways to keep students interested and engaged in learning. It is a constant struggle to come up with new ideas and lesson plans; some students are naturally interested and engaged in some topics, while others need a lot of incentives to stay involved. It has also been challenging to work with students of many different ages and ability levels. Advice for any new teachers or upcoming teachers I have is to work hard and find your own style, and be true to yourself and honest with your students by teaching in a way that matches your personality. Try to find a balance between high expectations and compassion. Stick with it. Although teaching will always be challenging, the first few years are the most difficult.¨
