Black musicians play pivotal part in American music history
African American music, culture, dialect and influence are so deeply rooted in American history that it’s impossible to describe alone. Many of the genres of music, argots, fashion, art and literature we all globally use descend from the same group of people who are so often incriminated and marginalized in this country.
We can trace the progression of music all the way back to the rich African musical heritage that many brought with them to the new world and accumulated with American and European traditions. Their songs, dances and spiritual rhymes became the basilect of American music, eventually influencing and transforming the world. The music of the African American people highlights their journey in this country, their metrical beauty, the cultural heritage of all Americans and significant influence worldwide.
