Youth in Government
Youth in Government (YIG) is a program run by the YMCA and offered at CHHS through ENCORE. Students who join are met with the responsibilities of running the different branches of the U.S government among other things. From electing a governor of one branch, presenting and signing bills, to debating and voting on said bills, YIG prepares students with the realistic experience of running a government, but also also the opportunity to learn how to effectively debate, speak in public, and create friendships along the way. Simply put, it’s democracy in action—but by the students. Last year, Columbia Heights Senior (and, full disclosure, Heights Herald Co-Editor-in-Chief) Gissel Inamagua won two awards at a closing ceremony, and at least one student had a bill approved by the legislative branch and governor. YIG leader Mrs. Natasha Olubajo enjoys watching students speak and debate their ideas and beliefs as well as observing students hold trials in the court. Email Mrs. Olubajo ([email protected]) if you would like to learn more or join.
